Web Access is Achilles Heel for iPhone

Complaints about the speed of the network that Apples new iPhone connects to points to the need for a new broadband wireless network in the U.S.

The iPhone uses ATTs EDGE network, which ATT says averages speeds of 100 kilobits to 150 kilobits per second. But one review in the Wall Street Journal called the network pokey, and a review in the New York Times called the network excruciatingly slow, saying users may almost ache for a dial-up modem.

iPhone Hack Publicized

Hacker Jon Lech Johansen, known widely as DVD Jon, has cracked Apples iPhone activation, or so he claims, meaning that iPhone buyers will be able to activate and use the new handset without having to commit to an AT&T wireless contract. Johansen announced his feat in a blog post entitled iPhone Independence Day.

The Norwegian cracker initially made a name for himself eight years ago when he cracked the encryption code on DVDs. And last year, he cracked the digital rights management code that prevents iPod users from playing songs purchased from competing online music stores.

AT&T Inc said on Monday delays in activating service for customers of Apple Inc iPhone had been mostly resolved after the wireless company worked out the problems on a case-by-case basis.

About 2 percent of those who bought iPhones since they went on sale Friday faced delays in activation with AT&T, the exclusive U.S. service provider for the widely anticipated cell phone, according to a source familiar with the matter.

iPhone on Sale June 29th

Apple Inc. will start selling its iPhone on June 29, a debut that will test whether the design success with Mac computers and iPod media players can carry over into mobile handsets.

Apple announced the date on Sunday, with three television commercials showing off the phones large touchscreen and ability to watch video, play music and display photos.

TouchPad iPhone

Apple has filed for a patent that indicates the company may be considering the use of a touch screen on other devices besides the iPhone, which is scheduled to ship next month.

The patent request, filed Thursday with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, shows blueprints for placing a touch-sensitive screen on the backside of a device for control purposes, leaving the front side for presenting information appropriate to the device, such as video.

Apple and Cisco Kiss and Make Up

Last wednesday Apple and Cisco resolved their long-running dispute over the iPhone name.

The companies released an announcement saying they had reached an agreement allowing both to use the hotly contested trademark. The agreement will permit both Apple and Cisco to use the iPhone trademark worldwide.

Cisco Suing Apple Over iPhone

Cisco Systems is suing Apple for trademark infringement in a US federal court, for using the iPhone name.
Apple launched its new handheld mobile phone device under the iPhone name on Tuesday, at the hotly anticipated Macworld event in San Francisco.

Following the launch Cisco said it hoped to resolve the matter by Tuesday evening after negotiations.
Apple responded by saying the lawsuit was “silly” and that Cisco’s trademark registration was “tenuous at best”.

A Canadian company called Comwave has been using the term iPhone to describe a group of services they offer. The  phrase Comwave iPhone is trademarked. It is described as a telephone service that uses your High-Speed Internet connection as a phone line. Hmmm…… wonder what Apple will do.
